Electrical stimulation therapy.
Gentle electrical pulses that reduce pain, relax muscle spasm, and help reactivate muscles after injury or surgery. A versatile, well-tolerated tool that complements active rehab.
How e-stim works.
Electrical stimulation (e-stim) covers a range of treatments that use mild electrical currents to influence muscles and nerves. The most common types are TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) for pain relief, and NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) for muscle re-education and strengthening.
For pain relief, TENS works by overriding pain signals on their way to the brain and triggering your body's natural pain-relief mechanisms (endorphins). For muscle activation, NMES sends signals directly to muscles that aren't firing well — often after surgery, injury, or extended disuse — helping them remember how to contract.
E-stim isn't magic, and it isn't a stand-alone cure. But used strategically alongside manual therapy and exercise, it can meaningfully accelerate recovery and reduce pain enough to let you engage more fully with the rest of your rehab.
What this treatment can do.
- Reduces pain without medication
- Relaxes muscle spasm
- Reactivates muscles that aren't firing well
- Reduces swelling and edema
- Improves circulation
- Non-invasive and painless
- Can be used as a take-home unit for ongoing relief
Common applications.
- Acute and chronic pain
- Muscle spasm
- Post-surgical muscle re-activation
- Quadriceps weakness after knee surgery
- Pelvic floor strengthening
- Stroke recovery
- Atrophy from disuse
- Edema management
Your e-stim treatment.
Your therapist places small adhesive electrode pads on your skin near the area being treated. A small device then delivers a gentle current — adjusted to your comfort level — for typically 15–20 minutes.
You'll feel a tingling or gentle pulsing sensation. It shouldn't be uncomfortable; we adjust the intensity to find a setting that's strong enough to be effective but completely tolerable.
For some chronic pain conditions, your therapist may prescribe a portable TENS unit you can use at home. This lets you manage pain on your own terms — without medications.
Frequently asked questions.
Does e-stim hurt?
No. The sensation is a tingling, pulsing, or gentle tapping. We adjust intensity to your comfort. If it ever feels too strong, we turn it down immediately.
Is e-stim safe?
For most patients, yes. We avoid e-stim over certain areas (active cancer, pregnancy, near the heart, pacemakers, broken skin). Your therapist screens for safety before applying it.
Can I get a TENS unit to use at home?
In many cases, yes. For chronic pain, a portable TENS unit can be a valuable tool. We can prescribe one and teach you how to use it effectively.
Is e-stim covered by insurance?
Yes. Electrical stimulation therapy is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most major insurance plans as part of physical therapy treatment.
How long until e-stim helps?
Many patients feel immediate relief during treatment. For lasting benefit, it works best combined with manual therapy and exercise over several sessions.
