Therapeutic exercise.

The most powerful tool in physical therapy. Specific, targeted exercises designed for your body and your goals — the active treatment that creates lasting recovery.

What it is

Exercise is medicine.

Therapeutic exercise is the targeted prescription of specific movements, strengthening exercises, mobility work, and stability training designed to address your particular condition. It's the single most important component of physical therapy — and the one with the strongest evidence base for nearly every condition we treat.

The difference between therapeutic exercise and a generic workout program is precision. We don't just give you exercises — we identify exactly which muscles are weak, which are tight, and which movement patterns need to change. Then we prescribe specific exercises at the right dose, the right progression, and the right form.

Your therapist teaches each exercise in person, watches your form, and progresses your program as you improve. You leave each visit with a clear home program — typically 15–30 minutes a day — because the work between sessions is often what creates the biggest changes.

What to expect

Your exercise program.

Your initial evaluation determines the specific exercises you need. We start simple — often just 4–6 exercises — and progress as you build strength and tolerance. Your therapist teaches each one in person, watches your form, and adjusts to make sure you're doing them safely and effectively.

Most patients have a daily home exercise program that takes 15–30 minutes. We give you everything you need — printed instructions, video demonstrations, or our app — so you can do them confidently at home. The work between sessions is critical to recovery.

As you improve, exercises progress: more weight, more reps, more difficult variations. By discharge, you have a maintenance program designed to keep your gains and prevent recurrence.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Why can't I just look up exercises online?

You could — but generic exercises miss the precision that makes therapy effective. The wrong exercises can make injuries worse. Your therapist identifies exactly which exercises will help you (and which to avoid), in what doses and progression. That precision is what separates effective rehab from a frustrating waste of time.

How often do I need to do my exercises?

Most home programs are done daily. Some exercises (especially strengthening) may be every other day. Your therapist will give you specific guidance — and adjust if your dosing is too much or too little.

What if exercises hurt?

Some mild discomfort during certain exercises can be normal, particularly when working on stiff or healing tissues. Sharp pain, however, is a signal to stop and tell your therapist. We'll adjust the program.

Do I need any equipment at home?

Usually very little. Most early programs use bodyweight only. As you progress, you may need a resistance band or two — we provide them at the clinic if needed.

When can I return to regular workouts?

It depends on your condition and goals. Your therapist will guide you through a progression that integrates back with the activities you love — running, lifting, hiking, sports — at the right pace.
